Initial Shopping list for skate boot project

June 17, 2008

As with any project in a new area it is hard to even figure out the materials one needs. I want to keep costs down but I also want to make sure I buy what I need to make my first pair of boots a success and I don’t find out half way through a step that I am missing something that is needed.

My total budget for the boot making startup is $1500 so hopefully the padding materials and upper materials won’t be too expensive. I figure that I want to start with enough raw material to make four pairs of boots since I expect the first pair will be mostly a learning experience. Hopefully by the fourth pair I can get something that is reasonable.

I am going to mull over the item list and check some other sites before I buy stuff. I figure that I want to start buying stuff in mid July. It’s a big project and I am the first to admit that currently I know very little about boot making but I am sure it will be a big adventure.

The following is a shopping list that I am working on for items available through the Fibre Glast supply house. This is stuff for the carbon shell of the boot.

598-A Carbon Fiber Tapes: 4 inch – 4 in. Carbon Tape, 10 Yd. Roll $79.95 1 $79.95

2120-B 2120 Epoxy Hardener – Quart (2.0 Lbs.) $30.95 1 $30.95
824-A Resin Pump for Quarts/Gallons – Each $5.95 2 $11.90
577-B Polyethelene Bagging Film – 3 Yard Package $7.25 1 $7.25
582-B Nylon Release Peel Ply – 3 Yard Package $29.95 1 $29.95
580-A Yellow Sealant Tape – Single Roll $7.95 1 $7.95
579-A Breather and Bleeder – 1 Yard Package $7.95 1 $7.95

588-A Quart Mixing Set – Each $7.95 1 $7.95
591-A Quart Starter Kit – Each $14.95 1 $14.95
543-B Style 7781 E-Glass – 3 Yard Package $34.95 1 $34.95
Subtotal: $738.55
(+)Shipping: $64.75
Total: $803.30

Hopefully I can make some contacts along the way and get some free advice about what to buy and how to tackle the project. It is quite likely that some of the items from the above list are completely wrong for the project and equally likely that I am missing some critical ingredient.

For the uppers I am looking at neoprene, eva, microfiber, and other materials. I want the boots to be lightweight but comfortable with adequate padding and durable construction. Some suppliers I have found so far are seattlefabrics, kingsleymfg, rockywoods, and foamorder.

If you have a source for microfiber synthetic leather that sells by the yard let me know! I haven’t found one yet. –John

You can try JMS plastics. They have a some microfiber suede liner material.

i suggest staying away from neoprene just for the fact some people are allergic to that material, and it does break down pretty easy for skaters that skate bare footed, I suggest full leather insides like pinnacles. And stay away from vinyl material just use leather, it is tougher and it adheres better to glue.
